The Judge: Your Silent Saboteur
At the top of the Saboteur hierarchy is the Judge. This relentless critic beats you up over past mistakes, fills your mind with worries about the future, and causes you to obsess over what’s wrong in your life or with others. The Judge is the driving force behind much of the stress and unhappiness you experience.
The Judge’s power lies in its ability to criticize, compare, and condemn—constantly evaluating yourself, others, and situations. It pushes you to chase unrealistic perfection, and in doing so, creates anxiety, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome.
How the Judge Works
Whenever you feel guilt, shame, frustration, or anxiety, the Judge is at work. It prompts you to focus on your faults, others' flaws, and the imperfections in your circumstances. Here are the three ways the Judge operates:
1. Judge of Self: It constantly criticizes your actions, making you feel inadequate and unworthy.
2. Judge of Others: It compares you to others, highlighting their perceived strengths and your perceived weaknesses.
3. Judge of Circumstances: It focuses on the negative aspects of your situation, making it seem hopeless and insurmountable.
The Origins of the Judge
The Judge’s roots are tied to survival. In early life, it helped you avoid threats by emphasizing the negative. While once helpful, it now oversteps its role, triggering stress and sabotaging your potential in modern-day situations.
Common Thoughts Caused by the Judge
What’s wrong with me?
Why can’t they get it right?
Why is this happening to me?
These are the Judge’s lies, and they all stem from its need to keep you stuck in a state of dissatisfaction and anxiety.
The Lies the Judge Tells You
Without me, you’ll become lazy.
Without my criticism, you’ll keep making the same mistakes.
I need to keep you scared of the future, so you don’t fail again.
You must judge others to protect your own interests.
These beliefs are false. They keep you from embracing a positive mindset and block your ability to grow.
