The Avoider Saboteur

November 04, 20243 min read

Have you ever found yourself putting off important tasks, dreading uncomfortable situations, or avoiding conflict? If so, you might be battling the Avoider Saboteur. This internal critic can significantly hinder your progress, limit your potential, and create unnecessary stress.

Avoider Saboteur

Understanding the Avoider

The Avoider is a master of evasion, steering you away from challenges and discomfort. It thrives on maintaining a sense of peace and avoiding conflict at all costs. While this might seem like a positive strategy, it can ultimately lead to missed opportunities, resentment, and a lack of personal growth. Avoiding pain also means missing out on the wisdom that can emerge from difficult experiences.

Recognizing the Avoider's Influence

Here are some common signs that the Avoider might be sabotaging your efforts:

  • Procrastination: Constantly putting off important tasks or deadlines.

  • Fear of conflict: Avoiding difficult conversations or confrontations.

  • Difficulty saying no: Struggling to set boundaries or assert your needs.

  • Superficial relationships: Maintaining shallow connections due to a fear of intimacy.

Overcoming the Avoider

To break free from the Avoider’s grip, start by commanding your mind to quiet its influence.

  1. Label and Let Go: When you experience negative emotions for more than a moment, recognize that you’re in Saboteur mode. Label these thoughts and emotions as Saboteurs and release them. Understanding how the Avoider operates is crucial for discrediting its lies. The Saboteur Assessment can help you get started.

  2. PQ Reps: Engage in PQ Reps, a 10-second focus on one of your senses, to calm the region of your brain where Saboteurs thrive. These exercises help you shift from a negative, avoidant mindset to a more positive one, led by your inner Sage.

Minimizing the Avoider’s Influence
In addition to practicing PQ Reps, here are more ways to reduce the Avoider’s impact:

  1. Set Clear Goals: Break larger tasks into manageable steps. Taking consistent small actions helps combat procrastination.

  2. Challenge Perfectionism: Embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. Every misstep brings valuable insights that contribute to your growth.

  3. Practice Mindfulness: Stay aware of when the Avoider kicks in and label the emotions it brings. This mindfulness helps you break the cycle of avoidance.

  4. Build a Support Network: Lean on friends, mentors, or coaches who can offer feedback and help you push through discomfort. Shared experiences can provide valuable perspective.

  5. Visualize Success: Shift your focus from fear to potential outcomes. Visualizing positive results helps combat the fear of failure and motivates you to act.
