The healthcare landscape is evolving—and so are the tools we need to thrive within it.
In a recent episode of Adoctorsjourney, I sat down with Helena Liu, a dynamic entrepreneur, educator, and YouTube content creator who is pioneering how AI and automation are applied in small healthcare practices. Her insights are not only timely but transformative, especially for physician-entrepreneurs navigating the dual responsibilities of caregiving and business ownership.
As physicians, especially those in independent practice, we don’t just treat patients—we run businesses. And let’s be honest: most of us were never formally trained to do that.
Helena’s work is a beacon for small healthcare business owners looking to simplify operations through AI—without losing the human touch. Early in our conversation, she referenced the book The E-Myth—a game-changer in her entrepreneurial mindset. The book dismantles the myth that entrepreneurs must do everything themselves, a trap many of us in healthcare fall into.
“It’s like creating the worst job ever for yourself—when you try to be everything in your business.”
That hit home.
Helena emphasized that AI doesn’t replace the physician—it amplifies their potential. For small practices, this could mean:
AI-driven appointment scheduling
Automated patient follow-ups
Smart billing solutions
Chatbots to handle common inquiries
These aren't pipe dreams. These tools exist now, and they're affordable, with many starting under $100/month.
Helena shared a personal story of running her first business at 22 while working full-time, juggling late-night calls and chaos. Had AI voice assistants existed then, she could’ve streamlined her workflow dramatically. That’s the kind of before-and-after story many healthcare professionals can relate to.
Why Small Practices Are Embracing AI
Data backs it up:
✅ 83% of small business owners plan to adopt AI this year
✅ 70% already use some form of AI
✅ 87% report improved productivity
AI is no longer a “big tech” luxury. It’s a small biz lifeline.
Helena’s platform exists to demystify AI and show real-world, tailored applications for small practices. It’s about removing friction, not adding complexity.
But she’s also realistic: the road to integration isn’t without challenges.
We tackled the three major barriers to AI adoption in healthcare:
Fear Among Staff:
Employees fear being replaced. Helena urges leaders to reframe the narrative—AI supports people, it doesn’t eliminate them.
Integration Friction:
Many small practices use outdated systems lacking API support. This can delay adoption and require system upgrades.
Unrealistic Expectations:
AI is not a “crystal ball.” Without strategy and vision, even the best tools will underperform. Helena encourages practice owners to approach AI with curiosity, not desperation.
“AI works when it aligns with your strategy—not when you throw it in hoping it’ll fix everything.”
We also explored telemedicine, a technology now essential in post-pandemic care. It improves access and engagement—but Helena is clear: it’s not a replacement for physical exams or diagnostics. Instead, it’s a complementary tool in a larger care framework.
On compliance, Helena didn’t shy away from the hard truths. HIPAA, state laws, and reimbursement policies still create a regulatory maze—especially for small practices with limited admin support.
And then there’s data. AI needs quality, standardized data to function. But many practices deal with fragmented EHR systems. Until we fix this foundation, AI can only do so much.
Helena’s advice for healthcare entrepreneurs:
Start small: Automate one task. Test. Iterate.
Educate yourself: Watch tutorials, join webinars, follow creators who simplify complex tech.
Engage your team: Demystify AI. Make it a team effort, not a top-down decision.
Be strategic: Align tech with your clinical goals, not just operational pain points.
Our conversation reaffirmed something powerful: the future of healthcare belongs to the curious, not just the clinical. Physicians who explore and embrace technology—without losing their human essence—will build practices that not only survive but thrive.
Helena Liu is a stellar example of what happens when tech meets heart, and strategy meets service. Whether you’re just beginning your AI journey or you’re deep into digital transformation, this episode is a reminder: you don’t have to do it all—but you do have to start.
